The section belonging to Christian Burkhart extending from Phillips Street to Rotteck Street was surveyed and laid out in lots by a William McCalister, May 17, 1838, and called the village of Baden for a city and state in Germany, Baden, Baden. The streets in this section were named by Christian Burkhart. A post office was established in 1852, but it was not until April, 1868, that the village of Baden, together with the adjoining farms of the Hills, the Moors and the Bryands was incorporated as the Borough to Baden. The Ehrman farm was included in the Borough by and Act of the Assembly of Pennsylvania, February 29, 1872. From these records is shown that Jonathan Hill in 1819 became the first land owner to settle in this town. He was followed in 1823 by James Moore and in 1825 by William Bryan, and Christian Burkhart in 1852. The first settlers of Baden have long since departed, yet we have in our town descendents of those early pioneers and later founders of Baden. AN OLD LANDMARKDuring recent years, a number of people, who lived in Baden only a short time, have asked me the why and wherefore of this old cemetery. When one travels around Pennsylvania and neighboring States, he sees a number of these old family cemeteries. The reason for their existence is probably for much the same reason as that of the Hill Cemetery, now known as the Hillcrest Cemetery. When this plot of ground was laid out by my great-grandfather, Jonathan Hill, and described in his will as a gamily burying ground, the nearest cemetery was a number of miles distant. Travel in those
