BUSINESS HOUSES OF THE PRESENT DAYThe oldest business establishment in Baden is that of the late William J. Blesse. The earliest recollection of a druggist in Baden was Mr. John Young about 1870. Mr. Young had an apprentice by the name of Christopher Hannibal, who succeeded Mr. Young. He was the druggist until his death, after which his wife operated the store. Dr. G. Y. Boal purchased the drug store from Mrs. Christopher Hannibal, now Mrs. Mary Ewing of Philadelphia, and hired as a druggist a Mr. James Bothwick who was a cousin of Mr. Young, the original owner. Mr. Wm. J. Blesse purchased the store which was located on Drive Way between the Overholt Grocery and Guthrie's Restaurant in 1887 from Dr. G. Y. Boal. In 1889, Mr. Blesse purchased the combined dwelling and store room which was located on the corner of State Street and Sugar Alley. This building was destroyed by fire on October 4, 1905, after which Mr. Blesse built the present building, now occupied by his daughter, Meulah Blesse. Mr. Blesse, a registered pharmacist, operated the business until the time of his death in October, 1915. N. Martin came to Baden 41 years ago, April 1, 1897, from Bedford, Pa. At that time, Mr. Martin, who was a miller by trade, operated, what was then known as the Baden Steam Roller Mill, at the present location, manufacturing flour and feeds of all kinds, corn meal, buckwheat flour, whole wheat flour, graham flour and grain
